Visit this page for tricky issues in Hebrew typing that may result in mistakes in Hebrew exams.

Notes:

• Please use the Hebrew (SIL) keyboard in Keyman.
• Typing Order
• You need to use the SIL keyboard. When typing Hebrew, use the following order:
  1. Type the consonant. For שׂ and שׁ, the SIL keyboard allows you to type each one as a single keystroke (using f and j, respectively).
  2. Type the daghesh, if there is one. Dagesh Forte and Dagesh Lene use the same key.
  3. Type the vowel. Always type the vowel after the consonant!
     • Type Holem Waw וֹ as Waw ו followed by Holem ◌ֹ. (Make sure you use the Hebrew Legacy (SIL) keyboard).^[1] Type Shureq וּ as Waw ו followed by Dagesh ◌ּ.
     • Use “O” for Holem.
     • Do not type “Shift + O” for Holem. It is for Holem going with the consonantal Waw. It is not needed in this class.
  4. If the word has a furtive pathach, type the furtive pathach AFTER Ayin (although it is always pronounced before Ayin), e.g., שְׁמֹעַ.
  • If you typed the pathach before Ayin, it will end up like שְׁמַֹע, which is incorrect.

  If you do not follow this order, a Canvas exam may read it as incorrect.
• Tips for Typing
• In this class, you will NOT need to type the accents and the metheg for any exams, and you should NOT type them (the automatic grading may count it wrong).
• For instance, type קָטַלְתָּ, not קָטַ֫לְתָּ.
• If a word has a final letter, type the final letter.
• For instance, type קְטַלְתֶּם, not קְטַלְתֶּמ.
• This also applies to three letter roots in parsings. For instance, type מלך‫/‬מלךְ (shewa optional but recommended), not מלכ.‬‬‬
• Qamets Hatuph ◌ׇ and Qamets ◌ָ are different.
• Qamets is SHIFT + A, but
• Qamets Hatuph is right Alt + O (for Windows) and Option + O (for Mac).
• With the SBL Hebrew keyboard (SIL layout), you may also use Alt+Ctrl+A (Win) / Option+A (Mac) to type Qamets Hatuph. But try to avoid it, lest you may get it confused with Qamets.
• Your answer will be marked as incorrect if you use SHIFT + A for Qamets Hatuph.
• The issue of fonts
• Do not worry if the Holem seems to be above Aleph that follows it, or the Holem overlap with the Shin Dot. It is a font issue.
• Also, with some fonts Qamets and Qamets Hatuph look slightly different. This is also a font issue. With other fonts, they look the same.
• For instance, take a look at this chart:

• Some Hebrew Letters are NOT accepted! (click to see details)
• If you use the Hebrew (SIL) keyboard in Keyman, you don't need to worry about it.
• It accepts inputs that fall in the Unicode range of \u0591–\u05EA. It does not accept the letters fall in the range of \u05F0–\u05F2 and \uFB1D–\uFB4F, except for \uFB2A (Shin with Shin Dot) and \uFB2B (Shin with Sin Dot).
• If you type these non-acceptable Hebrew letters (e.g., בּ or וֹ or וּ), it will tell you the name of the letter you typed and also let you know that they are not acceptable Hebrew (for the course).
• If you use the recommended Hebrew (SIL) keyboard in Keyman, you will not have this issue. If you use another keyboard, or if you copy Hebrew from elsewhere, you may encounter this issue.
• If you typed non-Hebrew letters, it will tell you that what you typed is not Hebrew . This includes the punctuation marks that are used in the Hebrew keyboards.
